The theme of the contest was really inspirational. I thought about a student with it's school uniform together with a kimono woman, like a mix of the nowadays Japan and the traditional one. I added some special features to the women to make her look like more as a youkai since I'm really in love with all the Shinto related stuff. I added some sakura flowers, I found them essentials for this piece. By last, there is a Sun, one of Japan's most important symbols.
For the technique, I inked the drawing with Pen and Micron. Also some Brush to correct the youkai's hair and the Sailor Fuku. To make the black colours more brilliants I threw a bit of salt, and it makes that effect at the watercolor. For the youkai's kimono and fan I mixed some washi tape to create a pattern. The rest of the piece is done with watercolor.

- I had the idea of using a background from a real street from Japan where I could draw different characters and buildings that could represent Japanese culture nowadays, I also had the idea to draw the sun as a plain red circle over a white sky, just like Japan's flag. I decided to work hard on the shaded areas of the buildings by using patterns to make the background as realistic as possible.

- I based my image around the things about Japan I find beauty in, kimono, flowers, the seasons, Ukiyo-e woodblock prints, Bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful people), festivals, and cute manga girls. I used only Micron pens for this, five colors plus black, with only about three colors per section, to show how a limited palette can be quite unlimited. I used hatching, cross-hatching, and different patterns to bring different textures to each section and balance the image as a whole.

The very first thing that came into my mind about Japan are the great and noble Samurai warriors.
They are very skilled, their swords and armor are crafted well as a masterpiece of art.
I thought of a stance that would showcase the swords and armor, there were big and small details as well as contrast of colors.
Black and white colors together is nice and by adding in a blue color adds up an impression.

- The drawing shows a picture of a girl, wearing a kimono, with lanterns, koi fish and cherry blossoms to create a traditional and oriental atmosphere. I wanted to show the beauty of Japanese culture by doing so. I used Koi Watercolor, Pigma Micron and Brush. I tried to make the background like drawings the Japanese made back during the old periods. I also tried using salt on wet watercolor, which creates texture because the salt absorbs the water.
